Abstract

Human papillomavirus (HPV) is a
sexually transmitted infection considered a
serious public health problem worldwide
because most of the sexually active
population has contracted it at some point in
their lives. Although human papillomavirus
infection is asymptomatic in most cases and
usually resolves with the help of the immune
system, there are several high-risk HPV
variants associated with different types of
cancer with high mortality rates that make
HPV more than a simple infection.
Therefore, prevention through vaccination,
promotion, and sexual education strategies
aimed at the general population before and
during the beginning of an active sexual life
is essential.
