Nutraceuticals in the Prevention and Treatment of Neurodegenerative Diseases, Health Within Reach
Keywords:
Neurodegenerative diseases, nutraceuticals, preventionAbstract
Neurodegenerative diseases are a group of brain disorders with highly diverse clinical manifestations that share a common feature: cognitive deterioration due to neuronal death. These diseases have a higher incidence in older adults, posing a significant public health problem in Mexico and worldwide. Currently, there is no cure for these diseases, and available medications are very costly and have side effects. For this reason, non-pharmacological treatments have been proposed, with nutraceuticals standing out among them. Nutraceuticals aim to prevent diseases and enhance the body’s physiological activities. They have been categorized, according to their composition, into probiotics, vitamins/minerals, and antioxidants. Various studies have confirmed a reduction in symptoms during neurodegeneration, as well as lower costs and side effects, presenting great potential for success.
