Abstract

Cockroaches are fascinating insects that have survived on the planet for more than 350 million years and can be found nearly everywhere. Remarkably, they can withstand extreme conditions where other organisms would perish. Because they feed on our waste, we associate it with unhygienic environments and the transmission of diseases. One key to their success is the diversity of bacteria colonizing their bodies, particularly their intestines, which allows them to consume waste and even certain types of plastic. As a result, cockroaches have garnered biotechnological interest. Researchers are analyzing the metabolites produced by these insects, identifying potential benefits for human health. This article explores some of these uses, which show promise in developing new antibiotics and cancer treatments.
