Mycetisms and the importance of ethnomycological knowledge in Michoacan
Keywords:
Edible wild mushrooms, toxic mushrooms, medical importance mushroomsAbstract
Fungi are organisms that play a very important role in nature, as well as a close relationship with several prehispanic cultures. In Mexico, the ancient tradition of collecting and consuming wild mushrooms is still maintained. However, the consumption of some species can cause mycetisms with serious health problems or even death. Therefore, it is important to understand the causes of mycetisms. The indigenous peoples of the state of Michoacán are considered mycophiles, and the consumption of wild mushrooms creates the conditions for mycetisms. Hence, it is important to understand cases of mycetisms and revalue traditional knowledge of edible mushroom species. The importance of correctly determining the taxonomic status of toxic mushrooms is also highlighted, so the doctor can have information for a timely diagnosis and provide appropriate treatment.
