Abstract

Nutrients are necessary for all living beings; we use them primarily for growth and development. But they are also essential for maintaining an individual’s defenses in optimal condition. The survival of all living things depends on how nutrients are distributed and allocated for growth and defense within the organism. For this reason, one might think that a poorly fed or "malnourished" organism is highly susceptible to infection, since, being weakened, it lacks the necessary nutrients to create or activate its defenses. However, in plants, a complex stress response is coordinated by the phytohormones salicylic acid (SA), jasmonic acid (JA), and ethylene (ET), which regulate both abiotic stress responses (such as nutrient deficiency) and biotic stress responses (e.g., pathogen infection). A poorly fed or "malnourished" plant has these defense mechanisms "activated", keeping it in a state of alert.

Dr. Homero Reyes was born in 1970 in the community of Poturo, municipality of Churumuco, Michoacán, Mexico. He completed his undergraduate and master's degree studies at the Universidad Michoacana de San Nicolás de Hidalgo (UMSNH) and a PhD at the Faculty of Chemistry of the UNAM. He is currently a Professor and Researcher at the Instituto de Investigaciones Químico Biológicas of the UMSNH, where he is in charge of the Plant Molecular Biotechnology Laboratory. He has directed and directs Bachelor, Master and Doctorate Theses and has published his research work in prestigious international journals. His research work is based on understanding the molecular mechanisms that control the growth of plants, particularly the signaling pathways that regulate protein synthesis (translational control) and the effect of biomolecules of biotechnological interest on plant growth.
